Composed between 1865 and 1868, this large scale work, written for chorus with soprano and baritone soloists, was first performed in Bremen on Good Friday, 1868. Brahms compiled the text himself from both the Old and New Testament, with the stated intention that it should offer hope and comfort to the living. It was immediately recognised as a masterpiece of exceptional vision and finally confirmed Brahms’ reputation as a composer of international stature.
