The sublime surroundings of Eton College’s fifteenth century Chapel is the perfect venue for Rachmaninov Vespers, or All-Night Vigil, to give it its official title. Under the musical direction of Oliver Gooch, Cantorum Choir present a quiet, reflective and deeply moving set of vespers by a composer who had a deep and very personal religious faith.
Separated into two parts, both the evening Vespers and the morning Matins, are full of exquisitely rich harmonies; the enormous range of colours and the virtuoso character of the choral writing are all employed in the service of genuine liturgical expression.
Performed, without interval, alongside J S Bach’s stunning Partita No. 2 for solo violin, this promises to be not only an extraordinary concert, but a spiritually uplifting occasion to mark the season of Lent.
