Mendelssohn - Elijah
The Royal Free Singers are delighted to be performing one of the most popular choral pieces of all time in celebration of our 50th Anniversary.
The critical and popular success of Mendelssohn’s dramatic 1846 oratorio, depicting events in the life of the Old Testament prophet, Elijah, made it the Messiah of its day, consolidating his position as one of the greatest composers of sacred music. Two thousand people attended its premiere at the Birmingham Festival, with Mendelssohn himself conducting, to great acclaim. Today the variety, beauty and energy of its many arias and choruses ensure its popularity and appreciation with audiences worldwide.
