Ivor Novello Gala Concert

Ivor Novello was a Welsh composer and actor who became one of the most popular   British entertainers of the first half of the 20th century. His first big hit was ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ in 1914. He is probably best remembered for his series of lavish musicals produced from the mid-1930s to the early 1950s. He composed and starred in most of these shows.

Join us for an afternoon of pure Novello nostalgia, all those wonderful melodies from ‘Glamorous Night’, ‘Careless Rapture’, ‘Perchance to Dream’, ‘The Dancing Years and ‘King’s Rhapsody’. Heading the cast is Britain’s Queen of Operetta, Marilyn Hill Smith, a favourite on BBC Radio 2’s ‘Friday Night is Music Night’ she recently played the Mother Abbess in the UK tour of ‘The Sound of Music’. Marilyn is joined by international soprano Sandra Watkins. Tenor, Philip Day recently toured the UK in 'The Sound of Music' and BBC Radio's 'Songs from The Shows'. Our special guest will be Jean Bayless, she was the original Maria in 'The Sound of Music' when it first opened in London's West End in 1961. Over the years Jean claims to have sung every soprano role in Ivor's shows. We are delighted Susan Valentine will be joining us and presenting clips from the 1979 film production of 'The Dancing Years' in which she and her late husband Anthony Valentine starred.
